  12.           One of the three experiments in Viking Lander 1's
  13. biology

  15. instrument has developed a leak that will end its operation.
  16.   
  17.           The instrument's gas-exchange experiment -- that
  18. looks 
  19.   
  20. for signs of respiration or breathing -- apparently failed to
  21.   
  22. seal tightly during its final cycle, while analyzing soil
  23. from 
  24.   
  25. the bottnm of a deep trench at the Chryse Planitia landing
  26. site. 
  27.   
  28.           The final gas-exchange experiment began April 3. 
  29.   
  30. Scientists at Jet Propulsion Laboratory first detected the 
  31.   
  32. problem several days ago, and have now determined that the
  33. experi- 
  34.   
  35. ment is inoperable. 
  36.   
  37.           Meanwhile a soil sample is being incubated in the
  38. biology 
  39.   
  40. labeled release experiment ahoard Lander 1.  That experiment
  41.   
  42. measures metabolism by the release of radioactive carbon from
  43. a 
  44.   
  45. simple nutrient supplied to the soil sample.

  47.           The biology instrument aboard Viking Lander 2
  48. continues 
  49.   
  50. to function and will begin its final soil tests about April
  51. 21. î  
  52.           Viking Lander 1 touched down on the Martian surface
  53.   
  54. last July 20.  Lander 2 set down last Sept. 3.  Viking is
  55. managed 
  56.   
  57. for NASA by Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va.  It is
  58. controlled
